The
Scotia Highland Dancers |
Nova
Scotia's Premier Highland Dance Troupe |
Formed in 1979, The
Scotia Highland Dancers is a registered non-profit society
dedicated to providing the youth of eastern Nova Scotia the
opportunity to participate, through music and dance, in the
Scottish culture that plays such a major role in the communities
from which its members are drawn.
The current troupe is
comprised of 26 dancers from Northeastern Nova Scotia between the
ages of 10-17 who have progressed to the premier level of
competition. Contact: Cathy Ryan 863-0249. Over the years, many of our troupe members have
represented Nova Scotia at the Canadian Highland dancing
Championships, the Commonwealth and World Highland Dancing
Championships. Over the years, Scotia dancers have won over
100 Nova Scotia, Atlantic Canada, and North American
Championships. We are very proud that some of our former
members have been finalists or runners-up at the World
Championships.
The tremendous success
of the troupe has been possible because of the commitment that is
displayed by all of the dancers as well as their highly acclaimed
highland dance choreographers. These talented women have
created a variety of innovative dances that combine grace,
expression, precision, and athleticism. Each dance is presented
with unique colourful costumes specifically designed to complement
the music and movement. The lively music creates an
atmosphere of excitement, which together with the enthusiasm of
the dancers leaves you with a wonderful Highland experience.
Although based on the movements of Highland dance, the
choreographers embellish the steps to interpret the music to which
they perform.
